ESL School Websites

November 17, 2005

I have had an enjoyable time recently in looking at the websites ESL schools have set up.

ESL employers,

I wonder what you think is important about an ESL website. Of course the Internet allows us to do so much more than the simple brochure could ever achieve, but are we in danger of becoming too technical?

I tried to imagine I was a prospective student and thought about what my needs would be. First off is a site that is easy to navigate. I felt happy to sit through “flash” introductions, especially if the pictures gave me a sense of the school’s location and environment. But after that I wanted to find my about what the school offered really quickly.

Next I was looking for concrete information: options available, dates of course, duration, fees. And to follow that I needed easy contact details so that I could make an enquiry by whatever method suited me: post, telephone, fax, email.

Once the nitty gritty was out of the way I thought it would be nice to see if the school provided a sort of online learning community with a forum, testing facilities, sample lessons.

At the end of the exercise, I formed a distinct impression of the value of a website to schools. The sites that were up-to-date, informative and generous with what they provided gave me a definite glow of appreciation. What do you think your website says about your school?

Respectfully,

Patricia
